Great place, tons of solitude. You can hike in and find a suitable place to camp. Just be sure to bring proper gear, and a compass if you plan to leave the trail. Be prepared if you leave the trail as it can get quite hairy. Hiked 2 hours in, mostly off the trail, hiked 5 hours out, no sign of a trail. Did not hear or see a soul the entire time. Great experience but come prepared!
Beautiful area in St. Francois Mountains of SE Missouri. This federally protected wilderness area, along with the other seven (8 total), are a rounding error of the percentage of public land in the state. Visitors can hunt, camp, fish, ride horses, abd hike. About the only restrictions are a prohibition on mechanized vehicles and tools on the area. Abundant wildlife and a wide variety of looks to the area depending on the season. Not too far from St. Louis and many other smaller communities.
